Due to heavy use, it’s common for kitchen cabinetry to get worn out and to stop functioning properly. In many cases, you can update your old kitchen cabinets and make them good as new without having to completely replace them. Although the process may be relatively time consuming, you can do it yourself, and you can actually end up with cabinets that are better than the originals. Here are three things that you might want to do to fix up your broken kitchen cabinets.
If you like the current cabinet setup you have and don’t want to put your kitchen out of commission for weeks on end, cabinet refacing is a quicker and cheaper alternative to installing a whole new set of cabinets. All you need to do is measure all the elements of your cabinets and drawers and go to your local hardware store. Most hardware stores career pre-made do-it-yourself veneers that can be ironed on. Choose a design that suits your tastes.
Once you have your veneers, you’ll have to remove your cabinets and drawers to make your work easier and to give you access to the backing elements of the cabinets. All you’ll do is iron on the veneers and give the surface a layer of varnish. All of this can be done in a single weekend.
If you have any cabinet doors or drawers that are beyond repair, they are easy to replace. All you have to do is take measurements for what you need and purchase some ready-to-assemble cabinets and drawers. These come with assembly instructions, but it’s usually pretty simple. Then, once you have your new drawers and doors, you can reface them with the same veneers you used in the first step.
If you’re putting new veneers on your cabinets, you might want to take this opportunity to replace any old hardware that looks bad or doesn’t function properly. Drawer handles, for example, are very easy to replace, even if you have to make new holes for the screws. Cabinet door handles are the same. Cabinet hinges are slightly more challenging, but if you take measurements of the holes left by your existing hinges and find new hinges that match up, then the process becomes very simple. In fact, most cabinet hinges have standard dimensions, so it should be easy to find a new set of hinges to match.
