Whether they’re wine spills, condiment drips, pet messes, or paint spatters, carpet stains are practically unavoidable over years of use. Many people assume that when their carpet gets stained, the only real option is to cover up the spot or completely replace the carpet. However, it is possible to remove most stains from carpet. No cleaning method is guaranteed, but it can’t hurt to at least give it a shot.


First things first, if the spill has just occurred, get rid of any excess liquid immediately. Blot it all up using paper towels until there is no more moisture remaining in the spot. Then, pour water onto the area (but don’t scrub, as this can damage the carpet fibers and make the stain deeper) and then blot it again.

After you’ve done this first step, locate your stain below and use the proper cleaning method. If the method described here doesn’t work, you might want to try a heavy-duty spot remover from the hardware store.
