Over time, aging concrete floors tend to develop cracks, pitting, or uneven spots. This can’t be avoided, as it’s simple a result of the building and the ground settling and shifting. However, it can be fixed—and in fact, if a cracked concrete floor is not fixed soon, it can lead to all sorts of problems, including cracked foundations, water seepage, and bug invasions. To patch a crack or pit in your concrete floor, follow these steps:

Step 1: Use a wire brush to clean the crack and to loosen any pieces. After cleaning, pull away any chunks that will be easy to remove. If you use a liquid cleaner or water, be sure to give it time to dry before you go any further.

Step 2: If possible, use a hammer drill to make the interior of the crack larger than the surface portion of the crack. This will help keep your patch in place and prevent it from crumbling or being easily lifted out. Insert some bonding adhesive into the bottom of the crack and give it time to dry.

Step 3: Get some vinyl concrete patch from the hardware store and mix it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Use a concrete trowel to insert the concrete into the crack, and smooth it out as you go. You may need to apply multiple layers. You may need to give the first layer a few days to dry before you add a second layer.

Step 4: If the crack is deeper than about half an inch, then you might want to use some sand mix in place of standard vinyl concrete. Mix the substance according to the instructions on the bag and fill the crack so that the substance is flush with the surface. After the sheen dries away, use a wooden float to make the surface smooth and to give it a texture that matches the surrounding concrete. If the surrounding concrete is exceptionally smooth, finish with a concrete trowel to make it perfect.
