When hanging relatively light pictures using shallow hooking mechanisms, you probably don’t need to worry too much about finding the proper location for hanging the item. If it’s light enough and the wall is not too shoddily made, then you’re probably not going to be going deep enough to run into any pipes or wires. However, if you’re hanging a larger item that needs a deeper and more sturdy hanging mechanism, then it’s important to find the right place affix your hooking mechanism, or else you risk several things: 1) you might damage pipes or wires in the wall; 2) you might damage the wall to a large extent; and 3) you might damage the item that you’re hanging (when it falls).

The best way to securely hang a heavier item in the wall is to find a stud. Here’s how to do so.

Step 1: Look closely at the wall where you want to hang the item. Look for small dimples or bumps, and if you see any, mark them with a pencil. If you find bumps or dimples lined up vertically, then they’re likely the markings of screws or nails in the stud. You can hang your item here, but avoid nailing or screwing items through the points that you’ve marked.
