Even the most well-made toilets eventually start to deteriorate. The toilet in the main bathroom is one of the most commonly used water fixtures in the household, and as such it’s only natural for the inner workings to begin to wear down. What this means for you is that your toilet will cease to flush properly, and it may even become leaky, leading to extra expenses and the potential for serious toilet problems that may cost hundreds of dollars to fix. To prevent this situation from happening, try to replace the tank’s inner workings every couple of years at least.
What you’ll need is an adjustable wrench and a set of replacement parts. You can buy these individually, or get a kit from the hardware store. Turn your water supply off before performing any of the below steps.
Step 1: Replace the flush lever. The flush lever tends to get a lot of abuse, and after a while it can become a little loose, which impedes the functioning of the tank. Fortunately, it’s easy to replace. Most flush levers are held in place by a nut on the inside of the tank. Loosen the nut with your adjustable wrench, slide the handle out, slide the new one in, and put the nut back in place.
