Light switches tend to get used a lot, so it’s not uncommon for them to get work out or just plain dirty. After a while, it can be nice to replace an old switch with a new one. It may seem like a very minor change, but it can actually work wonders for the mood and appearance of a room. If you have an old light switch that has seen better days, follow these simple steps to replace it with a new one.

Step 1: Head to the hardware store and purchase a light switch that looks good to you. While simple light switches are of course fine, you may want to consider options such as dimmer switches and timer lights. If the old cover plate is old and damaged, then you may want to get a replacement cover plate as well.

Step 2: Turn off power to the room by flipping the appropriate switch in your circuit breaker. Back in the room, confirm that the power is off.

Step 3: Remove the screws that hold the switch cover plate in place, and pull away the switch. Then, unscrew the screws that hold the old switch in place. Gently pull out the old one, being careful not to crack or break the wiring.
